2006 Covenant Cabernet Sauvignon |
A Cabernet Sauvignon Dry Red Table wine from , Napa, North Coast, California, USA
REVIEW BY ROBERT PARKER
WA # , #174 (Dec 2007)
Rating: (90-92)
Drink 2007 - 2017
Suggested Retail Price: $90
The 2006 Covenant, another full-bodied, full-throttle, kosher Cabernet Sauvignon is deep ruby/purple, pure, rich, broad, and savory, with a bit more up-front charm and possibly slightly less structure than the 2005. But again, it is a classic from Napa and should age easily for a decade or more. Jeff Morgan continues to make one of the finest kosher wines on Planet Earth. (For release, April 2008). Tel. Jeff Morgan continues to make one of the finest kosher wines on Planet Earth. There are 500 cases of the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, the source of which is the superb Larkmead Vineyard on the valley floor in Napa. Aged in a combination of French cooperage, with 50% of it Taransaud, this is a top-flight Cabernet Sauvignon, exhibiting a deep ruby/purple color and a classic nose of smoke, espresso, black currant, cedar, and spice. Medium to full-bodied with silky, beautifully sweet tannins in the finish, it is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and should evolve for at least 10-15 years. Tel. (707) 963-3887; Fax (707) 963-8394 |

2005 Covenant Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley |
Crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon pulled off a tiny three-acre postage stamp of a vineyard in the northern end of the Napa Valley, Covenant is Jeff Morgan, Leslie Rudd, and Yahweh's answer to the area's heroically structured cult Cabs. Plush with ripe black fruit and laced with notes of campfire smoke and pipe tobacco, it just might be the best kosher red wine you ever put in a chalice.

Covenant, Cabernet Sauvigon, Napa Valley, 2005. Score 93: The third release of Jeff Morgan's flagship wine and the best to date. Dark garnet with orange and green reflections, full-bodied, with soft, caressing tannins and showing fine balance and structure that bode well for the future. On the nose and palate opens with ripe plums and a hint of licorice, those yielding nicely to blackcurrants, Oriental spices and, on the long finish a hint of cigar tobacco. Approachable now but best from 2009 and then cellaring comfortably until 2017, perhaps longer. |

The absolute best Kosher wine to drink at Passover, and several more that ain't too shabby...
The Top Drop:
Covenant 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon; $80. This oak-aged, Napa Valley cab is produced by Solo RosaĆs Jeff Morgan and his partner, and it may well be the best Kosher wine you have ever experienced. Grapes are sourced from the Larkmead vineyard. Plush, soft and approachable, Covenant is packed with ripe black fruits and streaked with even darker flavors of black licorice and caraway cracker. A substantial wine, yet open and loose, it gathers itself into a satisfying, lingering finish. No acidification or watering back was done in the winemaking. Covenant 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
90-92 points
The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon (550 cases) possesses beautiful purity along with abundant amounts of black currant fruit intermixed with licorice, tobacco leaf, and spice box notes. It is a restrained, elegant version of the extroverted 2004. The 2005 should drink well for 12-15 years. |
